The ketogenic
diet is based on a diet with severe restriction of carbohydrates, which are
present in foods such as rice, beans, fruits, and vegetables. In addition, it
is rich in fats such as olive oil, nuts, and butter, with a medium content of
proteins such as meat and eggs.
Why the
Diet Can Help Fight Cancer
When doing a
ketogenic diet, the level of glucose, which is the sugar in the blood, is
greatly reduced, and this is the only fuel that cancer cells can process to
grow and multiply. Thus, it is as if the diet makes the cells run out of food
and thereby helps to control the progression of the disease.
In addition,
low carbohydrates can also lead to lower circulating levels of the hormone’s
insulin and IGF-1, and can cause cancer cells to have fewer signals to grow and
divide.
On the other
hand, the body's healthy cells are able to use fatty acids and ketone bodies as
energy sources, nutrients that come from fat from food and the body's fat
stores.
